Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy

Professor

Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, a fellow of the Indian National Academy ofEngineering, is the Marti Mannariah Gurunath institute chair professor at the Departmentof Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras and a core member of the Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and AI (RBC-DSAI), IITM. He is also currently the Dean Global Engagement and he has played a crucial role in shaping IIT Madras' first offshore campus in Zanzibar, and has helped formulate the Data Science and AI undergraduate program. Prior to this, he was a Professor, Chemical Engineering and co-director of the Process Control and Optimization Consortium (PCOC) at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX USA, Associate and full Professor at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, and Assistant Professor at IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India. Prof. Rengaswamy’s major research interests are in the areas of Data Science / Machine Learning / AI and applications of these ideas in the areas of Process Systems Engineering, Energy systems, Droplet Microfluidics and Systems Biology. His prolific work encompasses systems engineering, energy, and data science, evident in 150+ papers, 6 patents, and an h-index of 45. Prof. Rengaswamy has also co-authored a book titled “Data Science for Engineers” along with Dr. Resmi Suresh, IIT Guwahati. His work in AI has received best paper awards in international journals and conferences. He is also the recipient of several teaching awards and the INAE Young Engineer award. Together with Prof. Shankar Narasimhan, he has offered a course titled Data Science for Engineers. This course along with another course titled ‘Python for Data Science’ have had a combined enrolment of more than 250,000 students over several offerings. Raghu’ s graduate students are in faculty positions in several IITs and in the USA. Raghu consults in the areas of DS/AI for several companies in India and abroad, and is in the advisory committee of CII AI center of excellence, and is a co-founder of three start-ups incubated at IIT Madras.

Prof. Shankar Narasimhan

Professor

Prof. Shankar Narasimhan is currently the M.S. Ananth Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from IIT Madras in 1982 and his MS and PhD degrees from Northwestern University, Illinois, USA in 1984 and 1987, respectively. Shankar Narasimhan’s major research interests are in the areas of Data Analytics, Process Design and Optimization, Fault Detection and Diagnosis, and System Identification. Prof. Shankar Narasimhan is well known for his work in the area of Data Reconciliation in which he has co-authored several important papers and a book which has received critical appreciation in India and abroad. In the area of process design, he has made important and seminal contributions in the design of sensor networks, heat exchanger networks, and water distribution networks. Three of his publications in AIChE Journal were included in a select list of 210 papers as having made a significant contribution to Process System Engineering. He has developed several software packages based on his research work for Indian industries (Data Reconciliation for EIL, Leak Detection in gas pipeline networks for GAIL, and Neural Network Model based control for Envision India).Shankar Narasimhan has been a visiting professor at the Centre for Automatic Control in Nancy, France, Purdue University, Clarkson University and Texas Tech University in USA and the University of Alberta in Canada. He has also spent summer internships at Engineers India Ltd., R&D Centre in Gurgaon, Honeywell Technology Solutions Ltd., R&D Centre at Bangalore, and ABB Global Services Ltd., Bangalore as part of high-level industry-academia interactions. Along with Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy of IIT Madras, he co-founded Gyan Data Pvt. Ltd. in 2011, which specializes in using data analytics for manufacturing excellence. Prof. Shankar received the Emerging Entrepreneur Award for 2017 in the area of manufacturing and ITES from the Confederation of Indian Industries. He also co-founded GITAA Pvt. Ltd., in 2018, which offers training in advanced data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Alongside Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, he has taught popular courses like `Data Science for Engineers` and `Python for Data Science` on the NPTEL platform, with a combined enrollment exceeding 200,000 students across multiple iterations.

Prof. Arun K. Tangirala

Professor

Prof. Arun K. Tangirala is a Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras since 2004. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras and Doctoral degree in Process Control & Monitoring from the University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Tangirala’s research interests span the fields of process systems engineering, process control and monitoring, system identification, applied signal processing and fuel cell systems. He has been teaching several full-term and short-term courses on process control, system identification, theory and applications of wavelet transforms, random processes and fuel cell systems. He is the author of a comprehensive classroom text on System Identification titled “Principles of System Identification: Theory and Practice”, published by CRC Press.

Prof. Mani Bhushan

Professor

Prof. Mani Bhushan is currently a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay. He has a Doctoral degree from IIT Bombay. He was a Post-Doctoral scholar at Purdue University. Subsequently, he worked as an Assistant Professor at University of Alberta, Canada. He was also a visiting researcher at Carnegie Mellon University. His main areas of interest are Nonlinear, Constrained State Estimation, Sensor Network Design, Optimal Alarm Management, and Process Data Analysis.

Prof. Balaraman Ravindran

Professor

Prof. Balaraman Ravindran has a doctoral degree from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is currently a professor in the department of computer science at IIT Madras. He has been working in the domain of complex data analytics for nearly a decade and in the broader area of machine learning for nearly two. He has been recently leading investigations into learning with networked data, where both the input and output space has significant structure in them. His work has been supported by Yahoo! labs, General Motors R&D, DST, Adobe Research, and Ericsson Research. With Ericsson research there has been active collaboration for the past 5 years on investigating algorithms for telecom call analysis, social computing in general and distributed computing abstractions for data analytics. He is also an advisor to several startups in the area of data analytics.

Dr. Nirav Bhatt

Assistant Professor

Dr. Nirav Bhatt is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He earned his MTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras and PhD in systems and data analysis of chemical processes from EPFL, Switzerland. He worked with Prof. J B Joshi at HBNI, Mumbai on analysis of reactive dissolution processes using experimental data before joining IIT Madras. His research interests include model-based analysis of experimental data, machine learning methods and data analytics for engineering and finance applications.
